Hawai'i IMC Editorial Policy
Overview
Our collective consists of five core members (the editorial collective) and a large network of other local community members, who volunteer their time to
produce and maintain the content on this site.
Among our life roles, we are lawyers, students, web professionals, community activists, organizers, journalists, teachers, and even financial advisors. As
a group, we share concerns about Hawaiian Soverignty, Hawai'i's delicate ecosystem, military expansion, gentrification, housing, transpotation, prisons,
racism, classism, sexism, GLBT issues, and other local and international social justice issues.
In an effort to provide the people of Hawai'i with an independent, community-based news source, we strive to create:
- a media space that respects people's rights to engage in free and open dialogue
- an unmoderated, open-publishing newswire in accordance with our aims and ethos.
- a newswire and website that functions as a community space, welcoming members of disempowered or marginalised groups.
To this end, Hawai'i IMC editorial collective will prioritize submissions pertaining to local concerns.
Submission Guidelines
Hawai'i IMC will not tolerate disrespectful language towards people disempowered by their present social standing. We will not tolerate hate speech, specifically in regards to: race, gender, poverty status, sexual orientation, cultural background, or education. We will not tolerate language that incites or calls for violence. All content that is borrowed must credit the original source. Submissions containing plagiarized content will be hidden.
Features
Features will be articles relating to local issues or written by local residents. Articles of local significance published globally will also be given
priority. These decisions will be made by the editorial collective. We encourage the free use of materials published on our site. However, whenever possible, borrowed content should credit the original source. Submissions can be anonymous, at the author's discretion. Submissions without an author will simply be made on behalf of Hawaii IMC. We reserve the right to edit the style of any submitted features.
Newswire
The editorial group will hide any post to the newswire that is either:
- an obvious for profit advertisement
- a repeated post (duplicate of another post on our newsire)
- an obvious test post
- a post in a unreadable format
Hidden articles can be viewed by clicking View Hidden Posts, which is always available at the bottom of the newswire on the home page.
Open Publishing
The Hawaii IMC newswire works on the principle of Open Publishing, an essential element of the global Indymedia project that allows anyone to self-publish their work on a globally accessible web site.
People are encouraged to "become the media"--to use their own skills and abilities of observation, writing, and creativity in posting text, analysis,
videos, audio clips, photos and artwork directly to the website. You can publish to the newswire by clicking the Publish link on the top of every page.
The post is then viewable at the top of the newswire, and will move down the list as more people post news.
The use of, and belief in, Open Publishing rests on several central assumptions:
- People who post to the newswire will present their information in a thorough, honest, and accurate manner.
- Readers are intelligent and aware, skeptical and inquisitive of the posts they view and are able to distinguish for themselves what is content of value and what is not.
- The means to an end is as important as the end itself.
If you don't agree with a decision
We strive to make decisions in the most democratic, transparent and accountable manner. If you have any questions or concerns regarding our policy or our practice, please contact us at imc-hawaii-editorial at lists.indymedia.org. In keeping with this, the editorial policy will be reviewed periodically. Even better, join our collective.
